Whangārei Falls

Just a short 10-minute drive from the heart of Whangārei, Whangārei Falls plunges 26.3 meters into a crystal-clear pool, creating one of New Zealand’s most striking natural spectacles. With its graceful horseshoe curve, this waterfall is a dream backdrop for photographers and nature lovers alike. The falls are nestled inside the lush Whangārei Falls Scenic Reserve, where native ferns, nikau palms, and towering trees wrap the scene in vibrant green. Water tumbles year-round over ancient basalt cliffs, but after rain, the falls roar to life, sending a dramatic cascade into the pool below. Visit during the quieter off-peak months for a tranquil, crowd-free escape—perfect for soaking in the sights and sounds of subtropical Northland. For magical photos and serene moments, aim for early morning or late afternoon when golden sunlight filters through the forest, illuminating the falls in breathtaking fashion.

Why go to Whangārei Falls?

Whangārei Falls is worth visiting because it offers a beautiful, easily accessible slice of Northland nature just minutes from central Whangārei. The 26.3-metre horseshoe-shaped waterfall is one of the most photogenic in Northland, surrounded by lush native bush and birdlife. A short, easy loop track lets you enjoy both top and base views of the falls, making it a low-effort but high-reward stop that’s perfect for a quick walk, picnic, or scenic break while exploring New Zealand.

Getting there

Reaching Whangārei Falls from the United Kingdom is an adventure in itself. Begin your journey by flying to New Zealand, with most travellers departing from major UK airports such as London. While there are no direct flights to Auckland, expect at least one fascinating stopover, perhaps in the Middle East, Asia, or North America, before you arrive in Aotearoa after roughly 24–30+ hours of travel.

Once you touch down in Auckland, the gateway to New Zealand’s Northland awaits. Rent a car or hop on a bus for a scenic drive north to Whangārei, a journey of about 2.5 to 3 hours (roughly 160 km). When you reach the city, you’re just a 10-minute drive away from the falls, where free parking makes the final approach effortless and stress-free.
