Cardiff Bay

Cardiff Bay, and the barrage walk, stretches for 1.1 km, connecting Cardiff docks with Penarth and creating a breathtaking freshwater lake. More than just an engineering marvel, the Barrage invites you to walk its path—a journey where every step rewards you with panoramic views over Cardiff Bay and the Severn Estuary. With each stride, you’re not only witnessing a feat of human achievement, but also embracing the simple joy of walking in a place where water, sky, and city meet. Let each step inspire you to move forward, to reflect, and to discover the beauty that unfolds with every walk.

Why go to Cardiff Bay?

In the off-season, Cardiff Bay transforms into a haven of peace and possibility. The Barrage, waterfront paths, and Wetlands open up with space to breathe, inviting you to wander freely, reflect deeply, and reconnect with nature’s quieter rhythms. Here, you can savor the simple joy of walking by still waters, cycling beneath vast, ever-changing skies, or sitting in tranquil silence as misty mornings and glowing sunsets paint the Severn Estuary in breathtaking color. The softer winter light turns every moment into a photograph, every glance into a memory. With fewer crowds and a gentler pace, the Bay reveals its true character—an inspiring space where locals find renewal, creativity, and the authentic heart of Cardiff life.

Getting there

Cardiff Bay is easy to reach from anywhere in the UK, with train travel being the simplest option. Most visitors take a mainline train to Cardiff Central or Cardiff Queen Street, then change for a short local train to Cardiff Bay station, which runs frequently and takes only a few minutes. Coaches from across the UK also arrive in Cardiff city centre, where local buses connect directly to the Bay. Drivers can reach Cardiff Bay via the M4 and A4232, with parking available nearby, while those flying can use Cardiff Airport and continue by train or taxi into the city. Once in Cardiff, the Bay is close enough to reach easily by public transport, cycling, or even a pleasant walk from the centre.
